The Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax, explained
Form 2290 reports and pays the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) on trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. Once accepted, the IRS returns a stamped Schedule 1, your proof of payment for tags and registration.
Who must file
Anyone registering a highway vehicle of 55,000 lbs or more taxable gross weight in their name. Logging and agricultural vehicles may qualify for reduced rates.
When it's due
The tax period runs July 1 to June 30. For trucks in service in July, file by August 31. New trucks are due the last day of the month after first use.

Why 2290 filings get rejected, and how we prevent it
A rejected 2290 means no Schedule 1, which means you can't register your truck. Most rejections come from a handful of avoidable errors. We catch them before we file.
- EIN mismatch: name and EIN must match IRS records exactly (and an EIN must be at least 15 days old)
- Using an SSN: 2290 requires an EIN, never a Social Security number
- Duplicate filing: filing the same VIN and period twice
- Wrong first-use month: changes your due date and tax
- VIN typos: a single wrong character. We also handle free VIN corrections
We also handle
- VIN corrections (no additional tax)
- Credits for sold, destroyed, or stolen trucks
- Suspended (low-mileage) vehicle reporting
- Amended returns for weight increases
- Prior-year and late 2290 filings
Answers to the questions we hear most
Do I need an EIN to file Form 2290?
Yes. The IRS requires an Employer Identification Number, and you cannot use a Social Security number. If your EIN is brand new, the IRS needs about 15 days before it's active in their e-file system. We'll help you plan around that.
How fast will I get my stamped Schedule 1?
When the information is clean, the IRS typically accepts an e-filed 2290 within minutes to a few hours. We return your stamped Schedule 1 as soon as it's accepted.
What if I sold my truck or bought a new one mid-year?
We can claim a credit for a truck that was sold, destroyed, or stolen, and file a new 2290 for a replacement based on its first-use month. You only pay tax for the months a vehicle is actually on the road.
What's a suspended vehicle?
A vehicle expected to run 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) during the period can be reported as suspended. You still file, but no tax is due unless it exceeds the limit.
