Trucking FAQ

Common Questions About Trucking Compliance

If you operate a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce (across state lines) with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 lbs, or transport hazardous materials, you are required to have a USDOT number. Most owner-operators and carriers need one.
Your USDOT number identifies your company in the FMCSA system. Your MC (Motor Carrier) number, or Operating Authority, is required if you are hauling regulated commodities for hire across state lines. Some carriers need both; some only need a USDOT. We'll tell you exactly what applies to your operation.
After filing, FMCSA typically has a 21-day waiting period after your authority is granted before it becomes active (to allow for protests). During this time, you must also have your BOC-3 filed and insurance filings confirmed with FMCSA. We manage all of this for you.
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is required if you operate a qualified motor vehicle (over 26,000 lbs, or with 3+ axles) in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions. You file quarterly reports calculating fuel tax owed or refunded based on miles driven per state and fuel purchased. We handle registration and all quarterly filings.
Form 2290 is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return, due annually for vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. The tax period runs July 1 โ€“ June 30, and the return is generally due by August 31. Your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 is required for vehicle registration. We e-file and provide your stamped Schedule 1 quickly.
If you fail to update your MCS-150 biennial update, FMCSA will deactivate your USDOT number. An inactive USDOT means your vehicles can be placed out of service during a roadside inspection. We track your update schedule and file it before it's due.
Yes. We prepare federal and state tax returns for trucking companies of all sizes and entity types. We also help owner-operators with quarterly estimated tax payments, Schedule C deductions, IFTA, and self-employment tax planning. See our Tax Services for more.
